About the event
Banding Together: The History and Legacy of Jack Miner & His Sanctuary Host: Matthew Olewski, Executive Director of The Jack Miner Migratory Bird Sanctuary

Established in 1904, The Jack Miner Migratory Bird Sanctuary was one of the first waterfowl sanctuaries in North America. Dubbed “The Father of Conservation” by the Minneapolis Journal in 1906, its founder, Jack Miner, seemed an unlikely leader in North America’s early conservation movement being an “unschooled” world-class hunter. Ironically, it was these traits that made him destined for such great heights. Founder of the Migratory Waterfowl Refuge System, pioneer of waterfowl banding, and the first person to complete a full banding record of a wild duck, Jack went on to help shape hunting regulations, found the Outdoor Writers Association of America, and earn the prestigious Order of the British Empire "for the greatest achievement in conservation in the British Empire."
This Jane's Talk & Tour experience will delve into the life and times of Kingsville’s noted naturalist, Jack Miner. The homestead, museum, and Sanctuary grounds will serve as a backdrop, providing historical context.
Come and explore the wondrous history and legacy of one of Canada’s early conservationists!
