In the 20th Century, the citizens of Amherstburg saw several industries arrive in town. While a few enterprises did not last long, others were successful, majorly influencing the economic development of the area. Large factories were built, with the opportunity to export goods via the railroad and an international waterway. While many of these enterprises no longer exist, they live on through the lasting impact they’ve left on the community.

This walk will explore a section of the northeastern area of the town. Among the former enterprises situated in this area was Brunner Mond Canada Ltd. Established in 1917, the facility was one-of-a-kind in Canada. We will walk along Brunner Avenue, once lined with homes built by the company for its employees, and view the former production site. Along William Street, we will discuss a long-standing industry in Amherstburg. Border Brewers and Distillers began construction of a distillery here in 1928, and Diageo Canada Inc., continues to operate on the site today. There is much to be explored regarding industry in Amherstburg, including those businesses that may be gone but are certainly not forgotten.
