This Jane’s Walk will get into the details on who designs our cities and why they’re designed the way they’re designed. The walk will start with a discussion on a zoomed out, large scale orientation of the city's zoning and work its way down to the minute individual details of an average setting you might find yourself in, in downtown Windsor. The talk will discuss the roles of architects, engineers, planners, landscape architects, politicians, and citizens in these decisions and how their interconnected roles form the basis of our built environment.
Most importantly, this discussion will move into what these decisions mean for us as the inhabitants of these spaces. What it means for our collective environment, our ecosystems, our sense of public vs. private, our pride, our empathy, and our love for where we call home. Bring an open-mind and some creativity as I hope to talk to those on the walk about where we are now and how we can all help to make things better. These community organized events, like Jane’s Walk, might seem neutral at best to many, but they help us to unlearn our learned helplessness and push us to take small incremental steps to improve ourselves and the places we live in. What ideas do you have? How can we give those without a voice a voice in design? How can you help?
